Sébastien Castellion is recognized as a talented and sagacious translator of the Bible, in both Latin and French. After La Genèse, published in 2003, two members of the original editing team are now publishing his translation of the books attributed to Solomon (Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon). Nicole Gueunier and Max Engammare recall the aggregation of these three books, and examine their exegetical context as created by the Reformation. Thus, the history of these translations is related back to the controversies that opposed Sébestien Castellion and Théodore de Bèze, as well as Jean Calvin. Likewise, Castellion’s work on the French translation is compared with his Latin edition. The usual critical apparatus and tools – notes, bibliography, glossary – further serve the singular language and beauty of Sébastien Castellion’s translations.
