While the sixteenth-century pedant was in charge of educating young people, at the end of the next century, the word refers to those who abuse their knowledge in their relations with others. At the same time, comic literature made popular the character of the pedant, academic and sententiously learned, ridiculous in its degrading appearance, strident behavior and jargon. Jocelyn Rogé brings out the characteristics of this derisive caricature, and shows how Montaigne developed the notion of pedantry, which culminated in Moliere’s comical representations. However, numerous other authors also placed the pedant’s ridiculousness and the charge against pedantry at the heart of their own works, participating in current debates and epistemological mutations. The pedant’s literary success was thus fueled by a critique of intellectual sclerosis, peremptory opinions and affected attitudes.
