Throughout the Middle Ages, music never ceased to feed mathematical and philosophical inquiry and to inspire art and spirituality. Drawing these traditions together, Jean Gerson created a musical model for mystical ascension. The Canticordum, or ‘song of the heart’, beautifully expressed by the Virgin Mary in the Magnificat, is a way for Christians to draw nearer to God. Gerson nevertheless maintains the liturgical and anagogical dignity of the ‘song of the mouth’: the voice of praise is also a means to approaching God. Transcending every conceivable form of harmony, his mystical scale culminates in a sort of polyphonic unison with the Trinity, at the heart of a universal concert. This original theory is a milestone in the history of late medieval mystical theology.
