With a blindfold over her eyes, a sword and scales in her hands, and knee bared for all to see, the attire of allegorical statues of Justice might leave one wondering. From the fifteenth century, European courtrooms began to draw inspiration for their decor from biblical imagery: the crucifixion, Judgment day, Susanna and the elders, King Solomon. After the separation of Church and State, the decor of courtrooms gradually became secularized, exalting the justice of a bygone age and the civic virtues of magistrates with weighty responsibilities.
