Antique orators taught Angelo Poliziano, a Florentine humanist poet (1454-1494), the theory of the art of memory. His poetry presents the characteristic topics of arts of memory (calendar, list of virtues, catalogue of famous men…). The present study shows that the entire work of Angelo Poliziano is a work of memory, with a political end – history – an ethical end – the individual quest for happiness – or a poetical end – the transmission of literature. The author guides the reader through Angelo Poliziano’s vernacular, Latin and Greek poetry in order to explore the places and images of memory they contain, using relations with plastic works from the end of Quattrocentro. The analysis of stylistic processes regarding the disposition of places and the forming of images leads to the definition of a true « rhetoric of memory ». Though strongly influenced by Cicero’s mnemonic art, Angelo Poliziano’s poetics – which was particularly sensitive to Quintilien’s concept of creative memory – yet turns out to be deeply tending towards an art of improvisation.
