After the massacre of the Saint-Barthélemy, the Huguenot nobleman and learned theologian Philippe Duplessis-Mornay devoted all his energy to helping a Protestant prince accede to the throne. During the controversies of 1585-1589, he provided the futur king of France with ideological arguments which helped build supra-religious support for him. In 1589, he became the advocate of the Protestant cause with Henri IV, but experienced increasing difficulties in combining service to God and king. Closer examination of his reaction to the king’s conversion and of his involvement in the negociations prior to the Edict of Nantes helps explain his change of course and reconcile his intellectual, spiritual and political activities.
