Volume III of Les Mystères de la procession de Lille contains a critical edition of fifteen plays drawn from the Old Testament. These mystery plays are found in a unique manuscript in the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel, which contains a total of seventy-two plays that were staged in Lille on the occasion of the principal annual procession of that city. The plays presented in this volume dramatize biblical events taken from the First Book of Kings through the Second Book of the Maccabees. The first two plays are devoted to King Solomon ; the three following plays deal with the conflicts between Ahab and the prophets of God. There are also the stories of Tobias, Susanna, Judith, and Esther. The volume ends with plays that stage the exploits of Judas Maccabeus and Heliodorus. The mysteries drawn from the New Testament and from Roman history will appear in two future volumes.
