Written and staged in Lille in the fifteenth century, these unedited mystery plays are found in a unique manuscript belonging to the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel. Most of the seventy-two dramatic texts in the manuscript are biblical plays averaging 550 lines of verse. Mounted on pageant wagons, about ten different mysteries were staged each year on the day of the grand procession of Lille. The actors were members of neighbourhood companies who competed for the prizes awarded for the best plays. The collection contains forty-three plays drawn from the Old Testament, of which seventeen treat subjects not found in the Mistere du Viel Testament, and twenty-one plays from the New Testament. The other eight mystery plays are drawn from Roman history and Christian legend.
