Pétrarque enjoyed an exceptional prestige in the 16th century, and he played a founding role in the development of the language and the vernacular poetry. The sonnet, for which he provided the model, was a unifying form of culture within the different courts of Europe. The imitation of his poetry, the adoration dedicated to his persona of poet and of lover, the more general respect for him as a savant all constituted complimentary forms with a single reference, as powerful as enigmatic. The studies reunited in this volume examine the presence and role of Pétrarque in the work of the principal French poets of the Renaissance and of several minores. They make clear the role of mediations, translations, or editions, and emphasize the forms of a literary creation founded on imitation and variation. Through the repetitions and the contradictions that emerge, they aim at filling out and clarifying the too general history of pétrarquism in France, bringing the first systematic contribution to the commemorations of the poet in his seven hundredth year.
