A large part of Emile Durkheim’s sociological work, as well as that of his main collaborators – Maurice Halbwachs, Marcel Mauss, and François Simiand – was devoted to economics. Their economic sociology developed a critique of the political economy and rectified its methodology, as well as examining the institutional conditions of modern economy (contracts, social justice, professional bodies, etc). Simiand and Halbwachs added to this the study of behaviours in the job market and of consumer goods, before reflecting on the evolution of capitalism between the wars. Religious sociology helps to throw light on the social origins of economic categories.
