In 1851, the Parisian bookseller Balthazar Bance and the architect Victor Calliat co-founded the Encyclopédie d’architecture, a journal that would spread the ideas of Viollet-le-Duc until 1892. The history of the journal is first and foremost the story of the group of men around Viollet-le-Duc, including his son Eugène-Louis. The journal expressed the idea of progress and modernity before that of rationalism, but would eventually propound architecture raisonnée, a concept developed into éclectisme raisoné by Félix Narjoux and Ernest Bosc between 1881 and 1887. The history of the Encyclopédie d’architecture highlights the role of the editor in the history of nineteenth-century architecture.
