"Monsters are no more" declared Huysmans in 1889 reiterating the Goncourt brothers. Decadence revisits with a vengeance an old debate in literature, art and aesthetics to renew the collective imagination of monstrosity and, in so doing, to define itself. This book, drawn from a doctoral thesis submitted at the Sorbonne en 1993 (Marie-Louise Arconati-Visconti prize, 1994) studies mythological and feminine monsters as well as fairground freaks, analyses the relationship between art and nature and measures the impact of darwinism and embryology on a decidedly organic collective imagination, woven with feelings of decay and decline. Most of all, it shows that the genesis of monsters, suggested by Vladimir Jankélévitch as a definition of Decadence, has an application in the use of language and promotes hybridization in creative endeavour. For Decadence, to create the monster is to work against a divine conception of the world, to associate, to the point of confusion, artistic creation with procreation and to provide language with a body. A study on the imagination of a period, an analysis of myths, themes and motives revisited, this book provides an interpretative key to the climate of Decadence and certain of its wildest evocations. It relies on one thousand five hundred texts and images, carefully chosen from mainstream literatures and art of western Europe.
