This study seeks to identify the voice of one who, in the Middle Ages, held the key to knowledge and writing: the clerk. His ambiguous status between the lay and religious spheres often pushed him to distance himself from his employer and to enter the uncharted world of literature. A thematic approach around the poetics of rupture and a non-exclusive focus on three important clerks – Henri de Valenciennes, presumed author of the Lai d’Aristote, Henri d’Andeli, and Rutebeuf – and on a literary form, the dit (a story or tale), records a major social change and throws new light on some oft-neglected texts of French medieval literature. A selection of several unpublished or hard-to-find dits completes the study.
