The period from 1801 to 1807 are the crucial years in the life of the marquis de Bombelles; widowed, he chooses to take orders, but without power to fulfill the functions of curate in the Austrian states. Preoccupied with his sons' future, he sends three of them into the service of Austria, where one, Bitche, looses his life in the battle of Ulm in 1805. The oldest, Louis, makes a mediocre career in the army of Naples, a career from which his father continually pulls him in order to participate in the Austrian diplomacy. Everywhere the armies of Napoleon triumph in Europe. Bombelles and his youngest son flee before the advance of the French army, to the Prussian Silèsie where the marquis acquires a vicarage in a rural village and thus becomes a subject of the King of Prussia. Confronted again by the French army, the marquis no longer thinks of fleeing, but stays to protect his flock and spare them the brutalities and oppressions of the French occupation. He lives as an immigrant who, contrary to the tendencies of the time, obstinately refuses to return to France, preferring a difficult, but honorable existence.
