Around 1698, Claude III Nivelon, disciple of Charles le Bruns and ordinary artist to the king, readied himself to publish the biography of his master, who had been dead since 1690 and whose reputation and fame seemed noticeably tarnished. For unknown reasons, the text - undoubtedly the most important source about the art of the premier painter to Louis XIV - was never published. The original, missing manuscript was transcribed at the beginning of the 19th century under obscure circumstances. This transcription, kept in the Bibliothèque nationale de France, has never been edited. For the first time, this critical edition of La vie de Charles Le Brun, elaborated by Lorenzo Pericolo, permits the consultation of this text, which is so essential to the history of the artistic production in France during the Grand Siècle.
