Guillaume Du Vair was a councillor of Paris during the Ligue, president of the Provence Parliament for twenty years, then minister of Justice at the beginning of Louis XIII’s reign. He was also a proponent of the neo-stoic movement, was involved in the renewal of biblical meditations in the reign of Henri III, and wrote a treaty on eloquence. His works therefore touch on political, legal, religious, and literary history.
