This study on the satyric and agonistic components of Rabelais's "mythologies" sums up the author's publications of the last twenty years on the subject, from his Pantagruel et les sophistes (1973) to his most recent critical editions of Gargantua, Pantagruel and Quart Livre (1994). Through a series of close textual and historical readings, it leads to a radical reevaluation of the "myth of the Renaissance", and of the part payed by Rabelais in the struggle against scolasticism, consisting – as he said – in barbary, ignorance, and "ténèbres gothiques".
