The word eccentric, borrowed from the technical vocabulary of astronomy, comes from the medieval Latin excentricus, "off-centre". Heavenly bodies, such as the sun, which move away from their centre of gravity without provoking any anomalies, are a good analogy for the symbolic "eccentricity" apparent in the scholarly culture of the XVth and XVIth centuries. Writers such as Alberti, Erasmus, Rabelais and Agrippa d'Aubigné incline towards the "off-centre", entailing both an ideologically critical stance and a distorsion of stylistic norms.
