At the end of the twelfth century, these texts would have given an overview of Europe and Asia to an audience with an interest in crusades and pilgrimages. The Expositio mappe mundi gives a detailed description of a large map similar to the famous later map of the world in Hereford. The Liber nautarum mixes bookish knowledge on ships and thoughts on contemporary nautical practices. The De viis maris proves that very precise Atlantic routes already existed in the twelfth century. Far from generalisations on the “theological” concept of space in “medieval man’s worldview”, these texts demonstrate a rational and functional grasp of geography.
