En Ménage can be read as a minor deviation from the credo of naturalism. If Zola sees "the eternal suffering and the eternal folly of life" within this pseudo roman d'adultère that appeared in 1881, Huysmans offers with it a sweeping investigation of contemporary writings, in pursuit of delineating modernity. André the writer and Cyprien the painter never cease to question their artistic validity throughout the story which plays with such self-reflection as to throw off the shackles of the manifesto and dismiss the story by the destructive momentum of irony. Within the motion that establishes principles of a new segment of human psychology, the "crise juponnière", Huysmans derides the systematic responses and stereotypes that embody it. It is this mistrust, and consequently the invention of the skeptical novel, that Gilles Bonnet identifies in his critical edition of En Ménage.
