The astrarium, a clock showing the movements of the seven planets, was one of the most extraordinary technical achievements of the Middle Ages. Although the clock itself has disappeared since the sixteenth century, there exists a detailed description written by its inventor, Giovanni Dondi. Emmanuel Poulle, a specialist in medieval astronomy, gives a critical edition and French translation of the one version of this text that can be attributed to Giovanni Dondi with certainty.
