The Fragment de la Genèse en vers, written in Anglo-Norman sometime between the late thirteenth and early fourteenth century, tells the story of the patriarchs Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and finishes with the story of Joseph’s stay in Egypt. Although Paul Meyer mentioned it in 1888 and published some excerpts in 1907, it was never studied extensively. The poem draws on Latin sources (such as Petrus Comestor’s Historia Scholastica and Petrus Riga’s Aurora) and other Old French texts, especially Herman de Valenciennes’ Li Romanz de Dieu et de sa Mere, from which the anonymous author derived a large part of his retelling of Genesis.
