Les Faicts et Conquestes d’Alexandre le Grand, which Jehan Wauquelin offered to Philip the Good in 1448, recapitulates the Romanesque Alexandrian tradition. Wauquelin drew from various and diverse narratives in verse and prose, intertwining the sources, despite their heterogeneity, with a mastery of the art of composition. By taking an interest in the sources of his work, it is possible to describe and more closely examine the act of rewriting that is at the heart of creation during this period, bringing out the compiler’s issues and shedding light on the new by way of the old. The commentaries on the miniatures that ornament two of the Parisian manuscripts complete our understanding of a work that is particularly representative of the tastes and customs of the Burgundian court.
