The second volume of Rodolphe Töpffer’s correspondence contains letters written between his return to Geneva in July 1820, after an extended stay in Paris, and his appointment on 17 October 1832 as professor of rhetoric at the Geneva Academy. He started work in pastor Jean Heyer’s school, and while supervising the pupils, wrote to his fiancée Kitty Moulinié. They were married in November 1823. Töpffer and the pastor quarrelled, and the following year Töpffer opened his own school on the Promenade Saint-Antoine. To establish his credentials as a serious teacher, he edited Demosthenes’ political speeches with a friend, at the same time as penning the humorous Albums en estampes for his pupils and their parents, the annual Voyages of the school, plays, art criticism and his first short story, La Bibliothèque de mon oncle. Töpffer sent a couple of stories to his friend Frédéric Soret who showed them to Goethe shortly before his death. Goethe’s encouragement persuaded Töpffer to publish them at last.
