The Patient was an active figure in the Eighteenth century medical marketplace. Body perceptions and medical decisions were heavily influenced by lay médical culture and discussions with practitioners of all sorts, but also through social intercourse and individual access to medical literature. The exploration of the patient's world reveals neglected aspects of individual identity before the emergence of scientifique medicine and enables to breach hereto neglected questions: How was ill health experienced? What were the social consequences of illness and disease? How was health and the loss of health understood before scientific medicine?
