The Bollandist tradition appeared in the seventeenth-century Catholic Netherlands, dedicated to hagiography through the Acta Sanctorum collection. Jean Mabillon and the Congregation of Saint-Maur began a similar project on Benedictine saints during the same period, and both undertakings shared a rigorous and critical approach to sources, to the point of attracting the attention of the Spanish Inquisition in their questioning of accepted ecclesiastical traditions.
