In the ancient Mediterranean region, papyrus was used as a writing surface for the composition of everyday documents; on it were also copied the works of poets and prose-writers. The tens of thousands of texts that have reached us by this means constitute only a small part of the total production of the era. They are most often written in Greek, and come from Egypt. Other languages are also represented: Egyptian, Latin or even Arabic; papyri have also been found in Syria, Israel, Greece and Italy. The study of this material belongs to papyrologists, charged with deciphering, commenting on and then explaining papyri. The 26th International Congress of Papyrology held in 2010 in Geneva revealed the variety of papyrological approaches in use throughout the world. The reader will find in this volume both articles composed by scholars of great renown and works produced by those who will practice the papyrology of the future.
