The months following the official adoption of the Reformation in May 1536 were decisive ones for Geneva. With regards to foreign policy, Geneva had to assert its independence from Bern, which had occupied the Savoyard territories of Gex and Ternier since February 1536, completely encircling Geneva, and had also taken over the judicial prerogatives of Charles III, Duke of Savoy, in the Saint-Victor and Chapitre territories under Geneva’s rule. Geneva was also forced to defend the interest of its ecclesiastical benefices in Faucigny, a territory belonging to Charlotte d’Orléans, Duchess of Nemours, and otherwise under French rule. With regard to domestic policy, Geneva proclaimed new edicts and took disciplinary measures to implement the new religious doctrine. Numerous documents from the archives of Geneva, Bern and of the Bibliothèque nationale in Paris complete this edition of the registers of the “Petit Conseil de Genève”.
