Imperator Hispaniae

Les idéologies impériales dans le royaume de León (IXe-XIIe siècles)

The imperial history of Spain began well before the reign of Charles the Fifth. It has its origins in the small Asturleonese kingdom of the 10th to 11th centuries, some of whose kings were designated as imperatores. Its most striking development occurred during the period going from the reign of Alfonso VI of Castile-Leon (1065-1109) to that of his grandson Alfonso VII (1126-1157). These two sovereigns did not hesitate to proclaim themselves "emperors of the Spanish" and to demand a sovereignty which, in this period of Reconquista, was understood ideally to extend across the entire Iberian Peninsula.
This book retraces the history of this singular phenomenon that the Spanish historiography of the mid-20th century erected into a myth central to Spanish identity. Through impartial examination of the sources, this book seeks to define the processes of monarchical legitimation to which the usage of the concept of empire in medieval Leon testifies.
