Madrid, Barcelone et le monde théâtral fin de siècle

At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the main conflicts troubling Spanish society were represented in the theaters of the two great capitals, Madrid and Barcelona. Cultural competition was thus added to the economic and political rivalry between these two cities. By retracing the history of these symbolic conflicts, this work sheds new light on Restoration Spain. Emancipated from political control, Spanish theater became more in tune with the wishes of the people, giving voice to its democratic aspirations while also opening up to the international cultural market. While the avant-gardes and industrial culture stood in opposition in the rest of Europe, the tension between cities was the focus of theatre in Spain.
