1596 was a difficult but interesting year for Théodore de Bèze. King Henry IV, caught up in an uncertain war against Spain, dropped the project of peace with Savoy, on which Geneva's peace depended. The city and its Academy were not deserted, but there was difficulty finding professors for Hebrew and theology. Bèze no longer taught and indeed almost no longer left his home, but remained in touch with the intellectual currents of all of Europe, particularly Germany, which was rich in turbulent theologians. His old friend Piscator maintained his peculiar opinions on justification, which Bèze indignantly opposed. In France, the "moyenneurs" believed that their hour had finally come, but Bèze published a long response to Palma Cayet. He also prepared a new edition of his New Testament in-folio and of his poems. And regarding neo-Latin poetry, this volume contains a very curious letter of Melissus Schedius of 20 pages suggesting metrical corrections for Bèze's verses.
