«A book is the product of another self»: Proust's well-known statement is envisioned here as the literary translation of various investigations of the unconscious in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, before Freud's decisive discoveries. Edward Bizub examines a number of the protagonist's experiences through the prism of French experimental psychology as contained in the works of Pierre Janet and Alfred Binet in order to demonstrate how their startling observations have been filtered and subtly transformed through the writer's creative process. Four case histories which illustrate the early stages of scientific speculation linking the unconscious to the phenomenon of somnambulism shed new light on some of the main themes of the Recherche such as the fetish-like objects encountered by the hero and his «impressions» revealing the existence of another self. One of these case histories, Proust's father's clinical observation of Emile X…, analyzed here for the first time in relation with the novel, is shown to have been intriguingly embedded in one of its key episodes. A second pole of inquiry revolving around Proust's experience of psychotherapy in Dr Paul Sollier's clinic between 1905 and 1906 offers a new perspective on the role of involuntary memory. Proust et le moi divisé, through its scrutiny of pre-psychoanalytical debate, explores the intellectual climate which gave rise to a new aesthetic vision based on the «splitting of consciousness».
