Les Douze Dames de Rhétorique (1463) consists of an exchange of letters between George Chastelain, Jean Robertet and a certain Jean de Montferrant, accompanied by a series of descriptions in verse (called enseignes) of the twelve companions of Lady Rhetoric, a group of allegorical personifications who articulate a poetics that anticipates, in many respects, that of the Renaissance. The present edition is based on manuscript Nn. III. 2 from the Cambridge University Library, a document that is of great philological interest not only for its provenance (it was produced for Jean de Montferrant and bears his arms), but also for the exceptional quality of its fifteen illuminations. These illustrations, which are closely linked with the text, using the same metaphors for literary creation as the enseignes, have never before been reproduced in their entirety.
