The publication in Antwerp of Justus Lipsius’s Satyra Menippæa: Somnium: Lusus in nostri ævi criticos (1581) prompted many other humanists (Nicolaus Rigaltius, Daniel Heinsius, Petrus Cunæus, to name but a few) to apply the Menippean tool of ridicule within various feuds and polemics. This study aims to establish a better understanding of the resulting ‘boom’ in neo-Latin (and related vernacular) Menippean satire in the Low Countries and France of the late sixteenth century and the first half of the seventeenth century.
