Les Songes drolatiques de Pantagruel

Preface by Michel JEANNERET, Afterword by Frédéric ELSIG

A mysterious little book appeared in 1565. It was a set of one hundred and twenty plates which work on and over the theme of the monster, capriciously and outrageously splicing its forms with incredible inventivity. Except for a preambule which explains very little, there is nothing except the images. In their introductions, a literary historian, Michel Jeanneret, and a historian of art, Frédéric Elsig, suggest the probable origin of the Songes Drolatiques ˆ the milieu of printers, embroiderers and decorators active in Paris. They compare them to the fashion for grotesques and put them in the context and tradition of Gothic and Flemish "drôleries" (Bosch and Bruegel). They remind us that the mental universe of the Renaissance is peopled with monsters, and to try to get at what these strange engravings are about, suggest we think about the relationship of fear and laughter, maintaining that even if the attribution to François Rabelais is historically false, the images have the spirit of the joyous adventures of the followers of Panagruel.
