In 1548, Flemish visitors to Venice noted the name of a “Gallic Apollo”, Belenus. In 1647, a storm over Zealand uncovered several altars dedicated to Nehalennia, an unknown Celtic divinity. In 1711, Cernunnos, Hesus and the bull with three cranes on the “pilier des nautes parisiens” joined the Gallic pantheon. These discoveries had a profound influence on both linguistics, which would grant as much importance to the spoken as to the written word and would come to realize the creative and social force of language, and on archeology, which went from quoting literary sources and collecting, to describing matter independently from text, thus enabling the “invention of prehistory”.
