After being widely distributed in Italy, Poggio Bracciolini’s "Liber facetiarum" soon enjoyed great success in France. This was largely due to Guillaume Tardif’s 1492 translation, which was frequently reprinted in the sixteenth century. In 1878, Anatole de Montaiglon based his edition on the version printed by Olivier Arnouillet in Lyons. He admits in his preface, however, that a better edition exists, including a prologue and three more faceties. We have edited all 115 faceties in Widow Trepperel’s edition, in the hope that the role of this witty and spicy text in the rise of the short story in France will be better understood.
