Invention flowed out from the centre of the period which we call today Baroque; the creation of plays within plays gave a Baroque setting to the masterpieces of Shakespeare (Hamlet, The Tempest), Caldérón (Le Grand théâtre du monde), Corneille (L'Illusion comique) and Molière (L'Impromptu de Versailles, Le Malade imaginaire). If the definition is simple enough - to embed a play or fragments of a play within another work - the actual technique is much more complex than that of the familiar storybook game of the story within a story. The play within the play is at once an exercise of literary virtuosity, playing with the effects of a mirror, a subtle enterprise of dismantling the workings of the dramatic arts, and a means of putting the human condition at a reflexive distance. Approximately forty plays of Rotrou, Corneille, Molière, Scudéry and several contemporaries are analysed.
