An Isolario is an atlas entirely devoted to maps of islands. From the fifteenth to the eighteenth century, the genre enjoyed constant popularity. The whole world was thought of as an immense island amid the oceans, but also as an archipelago, perceived through its fragments. The isolario naturally sings the praise of variety. The modern age has all but extinguished the spirit of the isolario. In the era of globalisation, it is important to reconnect with a geography overrun with lacunae and gaps, but that saves a place for the idiosyncratic, however surprising. But if the isolario is an atlas, it is also a text, one that tells a fragmented, discontinuous story. Inspired by its cartographical model, Le Livre des îles inspires a literary voyage from the book of Genesis to Jules Verne and from the Odyssey to the enchanted islands of Melville.
