Le Parlement de Paris ou la voix de la Raison (1559-1589)

Preface by Denis CROUZET

Was the Paris parliament ever able to make the ‘voice of reason’ heard during the strife of the Wars of Religion? A detailed examination of parliament’s reactions to royal policy, mainly through manuscript sources, but also printed ones (political and legal treatises, diplomatic dispatches…) reveals the relationship between the parliament and the French monarchy. Contrary to common belief, the parliament and the King generally managed to negotiate a compromise. Persuasion, as well as violence and constraints, had a role to play in late sixteenth-century France.
