This study establishes a «topology» of «harmony» in the work of the sixteenth century Lyonnais poet Maurice Scève, and focuses on two closely connected problems. 1) the relation between harmony and constraint in Scève’s poetry; 2) the importance of the «effects of music» in the articulation of a poetic subject. Following an introduction that identifies topoi of the musical, philosophical and literary tradition, three analytical studies take up in turn the «effects of music», «harmony and constraint», and concordia discors in Scève’s work. Finally, the study returns to the more political aspects of harmony, suggesting interrelations between Scève's work and later French attempts to integrate music theory and political philosophy.
