Death is situated right at the core of the system of values held by the French nobility of the XVIth and XVIIth centuries. This is abundantly reflected throughout the narratives of the time. But this is not just any death : the noble man favours the noble death, that is to say death found in fighting. He is the one who bluntly defies death as en essential, unbiased and not to be ignored bestower of Honour. It is therefore considered a virtue of an order not to fear death and challenge if whatever the circumstances may be and a model of the noble death is thus set up and organised around both secular and religious criteria. Yet, even through this noble death appears as the most coveted, one can notice an evolution in favour of the fine death, that to say death in one's bed. Such evolution is encouraged by the fact the art of the war is changing and the model of an idealized noble death is also altered by the wars of religion. To end this multi-faceted onslaught come the policy carried out by the kings and taken over by the Church to domesticate the nobility in which death is no longer meant as self-sacrifice but meant to serve one's prince. This period of the XVIth and XVIIth centuries is the gestation period of what is called the Modern State. That death should find its place there as something discussed and debated was only natural and showed the energy of nobiliary throught. The French nobility was not fossilized on archaic and caricatural values but quit able to adapt them to circumstances while preserving the specificity that made these values not only unique but beyond the reach of common mortals.
