Diderot : L'Ordre et le devenir

Despite his directing the Encyclopédie, Diderot's credentials as a true "philosophe" have often been called into question. His thought hinges on several key principles but bears on all realms of knowledge: the power and limitations of the senses, the origin and function of speech, the meaning and the role of art... On the one hand, he credits inert matter with some of the characteristics of the feeling world — thus constructing a theory of nature whereby mechanism and vitalism are in balance, so that force and dynamism, order and constancy coexist in all things. His political thought on the other hand examines the origins of civil society, the elaboration of political power, and such aberrations as despotism and tyranny. By closely associating the functioning of society to that of nature, Diderot comes to define the basis for human rights and moral values.
