The Moravian intellectual Jan Amos Komensky better known as Comenius, published his Linguarum methodus novissima in 1648. In it he reveals his method of teaching and learning language. Astonishingly, this treatise bears all the characteristics of a twentieth-century manual, making its author the inventor of modern pedagogy. His feeling for pedagogy, his idea of language, his definition of the relationship between language and the individual, social, and cultural reality of the speaker, plainly surpass the ethno-linguistic and didactic opinions of the time. The treatise can be considered the missing link between Plato and Saint Augustine’s questions on theoretical pedagogy and those of contemporary specialists such as Saussure, Bloomfield, Martinet, and Piaget.
