«Practiques» et «practiqueurs» : la vie politique à la fin du règne de Henri III (1584-1589)

During the reign of Henri III, people often denounced the “practices” and “intrigues” of the king and of grandees in their writings, qualifying them as machinations or dissimulations, ruses, theatrical acts, and duplicitous deeds that corrupted relationships of friendship, fidelity, and obedience. If the troubles of the Catholic League were times for violence, they were also a time for persuasion: princes were constantly hatching and unravelling all types of plots by “playing” with their influence. The study treats these grandees’ techniques of influence, their ambiguous language and behaviour intended to persuade or to deceive. It sets the actions and statements of the sovereign and of nobles in the context of several political affairs, which are analyzed in detail. Founded principally on the letters and written accounts closest to the events, this essay attempts to restore the atmosphere toward the end of the sixteenth century of the political world in which decisions and actions were continually influenced by rumors.
