Geneva and Savoy were still at war in 1591, although devastation forced their armies to leave the region. Nevertheless, Geneva and Theodore Beza had to implore allies for help that would not come; while Henry IV faced the Ligue, the Swiss could not risk their precarious religious balance. Beza likewise faced doctrinal enemies, such as Lescaille and Aubery in Basel, as well those who would compromise to bring religious peace to France.
