The Livre of Mandeville offers itself as a detailed and picturesque tourist guidebook. The author traces the various itineraries which lead into the Holy Land; he lingers first at Cairo, where he supposedly served in the armies of the sultan, then he visits the places which were the theater of the events of the Bible; he next evokes the countries of the Middle East and finally, in the Far East, the renowned empires of the Grand Cart and of Prêtre Jean. Serious indications lead to believe that the work was composed in Liege. "Jean de Mandeville" would be a borrowed name, attributed to the imaginary traveler who reports his journeys. In reality, the work is essentially an adroit compilation of previous Latin texts, crusade and pilgrimage reports, or erudite treatises that since antiquity had offered descriptions of the world. Composed in the middle of the 14th century, this new treatise, written for those who "n'entendent mie latin" ("don't understand Latin in the least"), had an immediate and long-lasting success, evidenced by the numerous manuscripts preserved from the 14th and 15th centuries and the editions that were printed until the 18th century. It was almost immediately transposed into Latin and translated into all the languages of Western Europe as well as into Czech. The French Livre has come down to us in three versions, which are rather faithful. The reader will find here one of these versions, unprinted until now, composed it too in Liege between 1375 and 1390, and characterized by interpolations where the hand of Jean d'Outremeuse can be recognized.
