Did Christians in the late Middle Ages consider Saint Anne, Mary’s mother, to be a witch? Were there any real atheists in Rabelais’s day? Did the destruction of holy images during the Reformation really traumatize believers? In answering these questions, Jean Wirth refuses to reduce the people of the past to products of a religious brain-washing from which we have gradually freed ourselves. Instead he tracks the changes in meaning of deceptively identical words. The notions that a historian uses to understand the past, especially those of belief and religion, have changed over time and are not as straightforward as they seem. The term “belief” had no real equivalent in medieval languages. As for “religion”, it usually referred to the clergy’s way of life. The modern meanings of “belief” and “religion” appeared when the Reformation and Counter-Reformation made it possible and even necessary to choose between rival Churches. It is therefore paradoxical that the behaviour of people in the Middle Ages and even of the reformers themselves should be explained by “beliefs”. It reduces religious creativity to a passive attitude, as if religions just fell from the sky.
