New York, mythe littéraire français

Like Rome, Paris and Berlin, New York has achieved the status of literary myth. Building on the core texts (Manhattan Transfer by Dos Passos, Amerika by Kafka, New York by Morand and Voyage au bout de la nuit by Céline), many French nove-lists have taken advantage of the fluidity of this myth to assimilate, transform and remodel it. This book will explore the tradition from 1945 to the present. French literature offers a rich variety of styles : texts still close to the essay form, exotic adventure narratives, traditional genres and characters transposed onto this new stage, imitations of popular American literature, explorations of the various expressions of urban marginality and manipulations of a poetic material in the «Nouveau Roman». Within this diversity, though, the New York repertory – both iconographic and literary, enhanced by contributions from movies, comics and art – often prevails over the reference to urban life. New York invites all kinds of prose writing and all literary experiences. The metropolis becomes the mythical chaos of modernity, the fabulous horizon of the French novel.
