This critical edition of the works written by Pierre Gringore in support of King Louis XII’s political offensive in Italy (1499-1513) brings together for the first time in one volume eight polemical poems that endorse key policies of the French royal leadership. Refashioning in literary form the creation and disintegration of European alliances, including the infamous rivalry between Pope Julius II and Louis XII, these texts testify to Gringore’s striking use of rhetoric, poetry and drama to mediate between the French crown and its subjects. At the same time the poems offer evidence of the author’s intense involvement in the early Parisian publishing industry. Subsequent volumes will provide critical editions of Gringore’s other works.
